These are Three letter airport/city codes assigned by IATA (International Air Transport Association) a trade body of world’s airlines to different airports and cities in the world. So they have assigned PNQ for Pune, IXM for Madurai, IXJ for Jammu, IXA for Agartala, CCU (Kolkotta), CCJ for Calicut and so on. Some time back Chennai was called Madras and MAA was assigned to that city which is still continuing whereas MAD was assigned to Madrid in Spain, MEL for Melbourne and MLE for Male’.
